KCCA Unveils Smart City Agenda.
The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) team provided responses to audit queries on roads and drainages during a Parliamentary committee sitting earlier today.
In a bid to champion the Smart City agenda,
Eng. Kairanuma emphasized the importance of roads and drainages as a key pillar
while decrying the poor solid waste management habits and polythene bags
blocking drainages in the city.
To improve the situation, KCCA has shifted its focus to
Technology, Infrastructure, and People Wellbeing. The new roads under
construction will include various features such as drainages, walkways,
lighting, parking bays, sanitation, and hygiene facilities, with some having
dual lanes. This means that the cost of the roads will vary across different
areas in Kampala.
The city is set to benefit from approximately 70km of new roads, in addition to regular maintenance, with the construction of 31 roads spanning all five divisions.
In a bid to curb construction in wetlands, the
Kisaka-led team is also increasing monitoring and supervision. However,
addressing this issue requires a multi-pronged approach across the government.
