Police issue a statement on Kinoni Fatal accident.

Tragedy struck on the Masaka-Mbarara highway as a fatal accident claimed the lives of nine people on the spot.

The accident occurred at Kyoja Trading Centre, with the Territorial Traffic Police at Kinoni registering the incident at around 4 PM today, April 7, 2023.

According to ASP Faridah Nampiima, PRO Traffic and Road Safety, the collision involved an Alphard, registration number UBL 314C, traveling from Kampala towards Mbarara, and a fuel tanker with registration numbers SSD 327S/SSD 137Q, headed in the opposite direction from Mbarara/Kinoni town.

The preliminary findings indicate that the Alphard driver was speeding and driving on the right side of the road when the head-on collision occurred, leading to the tragic loss of lives.

The deceased include seven adults and two juveniles who were passengers in the Alphard.

The driver of the fuel truck and his assistant sustained injuries and were rushed to Masaka referral hospital for treatment. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and more details will be communicated shortly.

The Traffic and Road Safety department is cautioning motorists traveling upcountry for Easter celebrations to avoid speeding, phone use while driving, drink driving, and any other indiscipline that may result in accidents.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased victims. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the need for road safety measures to prevent such tragedies.
