In a major effort to end child exploitation, authorities in Kampala have rescued 229 street children over the past week during an ongoing security operation. The most recent evening operation saw the highest single-day rescue, with 149 children—26 boys and 123 girls—safely removed from the streets. Earlier in the week, team members focused on busy business hubs across the city. On the second day of the operation, 50 children (32 boys and 18 girls) were rescued from areas including Owino, Nakasero, Guanda, and Kisenyi markets, as well as Kibuye. This followed a Saturday operation where officers brought 30 more children (10 boys and 20 girls) to safety. All 229 children have been transferred to the Masulita Children’s Rehabilitation Centre. At the center, they are receiving temporary shelter, urgent medical care, psychosocial support, and rehabilitation services to prepare them for a safe return to their families. He died on August 27, 2026, at the age of 34 while receiving treatment for cancer at a hospital in the United States. King Oyo became famous around the world in September 1995 when he was crowned king at just three years old, following the death of his father, King Olimi III. This made him the world's youngest reigning monarch at the time. Because he was so young, his mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, alongside other family members and regents, helped guide him and manage the kingdom's traditional duties while he grew up. His coronation ceremony in 1995 mixed deep cultural rituals—including a mock battle and the beating of the sacred Nyalebe drum—with a Christian service attended by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
