Lawyer Male Mabirizi Released from Luzira Prison.

 

Male Mabirizi, a city lawyer who was serving an 18-month prison sentence at Luzira Prison, has been released before his term was due to end.

Mabirizi had stated in a recent letter that he was going to be released on Saturday, 25th February 2023, before midday, as the Prisons Act allows for the state to release prisoners before the completion of their sentence.

According to section 84(2) of the Prisons Act 2006, "Each prisoner on admission shall be credited with the full amount of remission (one third of sentence)."

Mabirizi had been sentenced to 18 months in February 2022 over contempt of court, but argued that he should be released after serving 12 months.

He plans to hold an online interaction with the media and the public to talk about his prison experience.
