KAMPALA, UGANDA – The 2nd Uganda Urban Refugee Marathon recently brought together refugees and Ugandan citizens at Old Kampala Secondary School, fostering a spirit of unity and support for urban refugee communities. The event, organized by the Office of the President, Diaspora Affairs, in collaboration with the Forum for Youth Organizations, aimed to raise awareness and support for refugees in Uganda, which hosts the largest refugee population in Africa.
A key participant in the marathon was the Anti Corrupt Unit State House, highlighting its commitment to ensuring fair treatment for all refugees.
The chief runner, Uganda's 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East African Affairs, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, spoke at the event, emphasizing the country's strong support for refugees. She noted that Uganda currently provides a home for over 1 million refugees. Hon. Kadaga assured the refugee community of a peaceful stay and a supportive environment for their businesses.
The Anti Corrupt Unit State House reaffirmed its dedication to helping all refugees. The organization stated its ongoing commitment to fighting corruption, vowing to take action against anyone caught asking for bribes during documentation processes or other activities related to refugees. This pledge aims to protect vulnerable refugees from exploitation and ensure they receive the assistance they need without hindrance.
The marathon served as a powerful platform, not only promoting physical activity but also strengthening the bond between refugees and nationals, and reinforcing Uganda's humanitarian efforts.
