New Market Coming to Elegu to Boost Trade.

Elegu, Uganda – A new, modern market is being built in Elegu Town Council to help trade with South Sudan. This new market will be more resilient to climate change and will be designed to be fair to everyone, including women and people with disabilities.

Elegu is a very important trade area for Uganda, acting as the third-largest entry point for informal trade into South Sudan. In 2022, goods worth $220 million USD passed through this area.

However, the area often has problems with floods, bad facilities, and a lack of easy access to banking. These issues have slowed down trade.

To fix these problems, the Government of Uganda is getting help from the European Union and the Embassy of Denmark. They are investing €9.8 million (41 billion Ugandan shillings) in the project.

This new market will:

  • Stop floods from closing the market.

  • Provide good, safe trading spaces for women and people with disabilities.

  • Offer banking services that people can afford.

  • Help trade continue all year long.
