President Museveni Honors Fallen Heroes and Calls for Economic Growth.
KAMPALA — President Yoweri Museveni has praised the brave Ugandans who fought for the country's freedom, while urging citizens to focus on growing their household wealth.
The President shared this message today, June 9, to mark Heroes Day.
President Museveni explained that June 9 was chosen as Heroes Day to remember the hundreds of thousands of people who died during the liberation war, especially in the Luweero Triangle. He noted that after the war ended in 1986, the government collected skulls from 32 big graves to show the world the terrible things the people of Uganda went through.
The President reminded citizens that before his government took over, Uganda was in a terrible state.
The economy had completely crashed.
The government had failed to protect its citizens.
People lived in constant fear.
For 18 years, Ugandans were not allowed to vote for their leaders.
"Our objectives were therefore clear: restore democracy, guarantee security, expand and diversify the economy, and rebuild the country," Museveni said.
President Museveni thanked both the soldiers and the everyday citizens who fought in the bush to bring peace back to Uganda. He also sent special greetings to the families of the heroes who died during the struggle.
While thanking the veterans for bringing security and democracy, the President said the country's next big fight is against poverty. He challenged every Ugandan family to work hard, join the modern economy, and make sure they are earning a steady income.
