14 Dead in Horrific Head-On Crash Along Kampala–Masaka Highway.

14 people, including a police officer, lost their lives late Monday night following a horrific head-on collision at Kamuwunga Trading Center along the Lwera swamp stretch on the Kampala–Masaka Highway.

The tragic crash occurred on August 3, 2026, at around 11:40 PM, involving a Toyota Hiace taxi (UA 662AQ) traveling toward Masaka and a Sino Truck (UBS 040F) loaded with sand heading toward Kampala.

Police preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the heavily loaded Sino Truck was attempting to dodge newly installed speed humps on his lane, erected due to ongoing road construction. In the process, the truck driver swerved into the oncoming lane, crashing directly into the Toyota Hiace, which was traveling correctly in its lane.

The impact stuck both vehicles together. Due to the weight of the sand, the truck dragged the taxi backward for approximately 30 meters off the point of impact to the right side of the road.

The deceased identified so far include:

  • Abdul Karim Ssembatya (Driver), resident of Masaka City

  • Alobo Alice Gracious, 30, resident of Opit Town Council, Omoro District

  • Kizza Moses, 30, resident of Kyetume, Kyotera District

  • Natondwa Joanita, 23, resident of Masaka City

  • Namajja Aidah, 52, resident of Masaka City

  • Ssebuuma Lawrence, 34, resident of Mabaale Kifuufu, Kyotera District

  • Nabbosa Margaret, 36, resident of Zirobwe Town Council, Luwero District

  • Nabbulime Veronica and her female juvenile child

  • Kizza Moses, 27

  • Irora Innocent, 39, resident of Kyegegwa Town Council and employee of Coca-Cola Namanve

  • No. 44616 Sgt. Nabukeya, a police officer whose duty station is yet to be established

  • Two unidentified male adults

Four survivors were rescued from the scene, including Edward Kaiga, 22, a passenger in the Sino Truck, two male adults from the taxi, and another unidentified male passenger from the Sino Truck.


Police officers from Kalungu, alongside the Regional Traffic Officer (RTO) for Masaka East and the District Police Commander (DPC), visited and documented the scene. Red Cross ambulances evacuated the injured survivors to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for urgent medical care, while police vehicle UP 5513 transported the bodies of the deceased to the hospital mortuary.

Both wreckage vehicles have been towed to Lukaya Police Yard pending Inspection of Vehicles (IOV). Police have attributed the cause of the crash to reckless driving by the Sino Truck driver, who fled the scene immediately after the incident. A manhunt is currently underway to track down and arrest the fleeing driver.

Uganda's Army Chief Meets UN Peacekeeping Commander

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of Uganda's army, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, met with the top military leader of the UN peacekeeping force in Congo (DRC) this Saturday. The UN leader was Lt Gen Ulisses De Mesquita Gomes, the Force Commander for MONUSCO. The meeting took place at the Special Forces Command (SFC) headquarters in Entebbe. The main topic was how to improve security cooperation in the eastern part of the DRC. Uganda's army (UPDF) is already working there to fight the ADF and other terrorist groups.
