Luzira, Uganda – The Luzira Prisons Staff Hospital has been officially opened by Dr. Diana Kanzira Atwine, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health. This new hospital is a very important addition to the healthcare services of the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS).
Dr. Atwine toured the new hospital with the Commissioner General of Prisons, other top UPS managers, and prison health workers. The hospital is well-equipped with many services, including:
Wards for patients who come for a short visit and those who need to stay overnight.
A modern operating room for surgeries.
Laboratory and testing services.
A pharmacy for medicines.
Special units for mothers and children.
The Ministry of Health is promising to give full support to improve healthcare services in Uganda's prisons. Dr. Atwine from the Ministry has acknowledged the special challenges of providing medical care to prisoners.
To help, she has a plan that includes several key actions:
The Ministry will look again at the budget for medicines to make sure it meets the unique needs of prisoners.
They will complete a big plan for a new National Prisoners Referral Hospital at Murchison Bay Prison.
New medical equipment will be provided for special units.
The hospital's operating theatre will be fully furnished, and staff will be trained to use it.
More health workers will be sent to help in the prison healthcare centers.
