KAMPALA — It was a day of celebration at the Prisons Headquarters today as the Uganda Prisons Netball Club officially presented their newly won East African Netball Club Championship trophy to the Commissioner General of Prisons, Can. Dr. Johnson Byabashaija. The team, smiling and proudly wearing their medals, was warmly received by Dr. Byabashaija. The regional victory cements the club's status as one of the most dominant forces in East African netball. The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) took a big step in training its staff by graduating 58 officers. They finished the fourth class of the Prisons Intermediate Command and Staff Course. The ceremony was held on Friday, November 14, 2025, at the Prisons Academy and Training School (PATS) in Luzira. This graduation shows the UPS is working hard to create a strong, professional, and skilled workforce. This training started in 2022 as part of the UPS's plan to prepare a new group of prison leaders. The program has been growing every year: 2023: 20 officers trained. 2024: 30 officers trained. June 2025: 60 officers trained. The course teaches officers key skills like leadership, finding solutions to problems, and management. The Chief of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, visited the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds today. General Kainerugaba was there to check on the final practice for the Independence Day parade. Soldiers from the UPDF, officers from the Police, and staff from the Uganda Prisons service were all practicing together for the joint parade. The parade is a major part of the upcoming celebrations for Uganda's 63rd Independence Day. The main event will take place soon at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

Luzira, Uganda – The Luzira Prisons Staff Hospital has been officially opened by Dr. Diana Kanzira Atwine, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health. This new hospital is a very important addition to the healthcare services of the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS). Dr. Atwine toured the new hospital with the Commissioner General of Prisons, other top UPS managers, and prison health workers. The hospital is well-equipped with many services, including: Wards for patients who come for a short visit and those who need to stay overnight. A modern operating room for surgeries. Laboratory and testing services. A pharmacy for medicines. Special units for mothers and children. The Ministry of Health is promising to give full support to improve healthcare services in Uganda's prisons.
