President Museveni Opens Hoima City Stadium Ahead of AFCON.
HOIMA CITY – Under a bright sky and amid the cheers of local residents, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni officially opened the new Hoima City Stadium yesterday. The event was more than just a ribbon-cutting ceremony; it felt like the beginning of a new chapter for sports fans and families across Uganda.
The stadium is a massive, modern structure that stands as a symbol of pride for the region. During his speech, the President described the facility as a "major national asset," explaining that it belongs to every Ugandan and will serve as a hub for talent, unity, and celebration for years to come.
The timing of this opening is no accident. Uganda is preparing to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—the biggest football tournament on the continent—alongside neighbors Kenya and Tanzania.
President Museveni shared that the stadium was built in a very specific spot for a reason. To meet the high standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the stadium sits near an international airport. This means that when international teams and fans fly in for the tournament, they can get to the heart of the action quickly and comfortably. "This isn't just a field with seats," one local resident remarked. "This is our chance to show the whole of Africa what Hoima can do."
While the excitement about football was high, President Museveni took a moment to speak directly to the hearts of the people about a different kind of teamwork: protecting the environment.
He reminded everyone that a beautiful stadium deserves a beautiful city. The President called on all residents to embrace "responsible waste disposal," urging them not to litter and to take pride in keeping their surroundings clean.
Keep it Clean: Avoid dumping trash in drains or on the streets.
Protect the Land: Ensure that the environment around this "national asset" stays healthy for future generations.
For the people of Hoima, the stadium represents more than just a place to watch a match. It means new jobs, more visitors to local businesses, and a place where young boys and girls can dream of becoming the next big football stars.
As the sun set over the new stands, the message of the day was clear: the stadium is ready, the goals are set, and now it is up to the community to fill it with spirit and keep it shining.
