The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of Uganda's army, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, met with the top military leader of the UN peacekeeping force in Congo (DRC) this Saturday. The UN leader was Lt Gen Ulisses De Mesquita Gomes, the Force Commander for MONUSCO. The meeting took place at the Special Forces Command (SFC) headquarters in Entebbe. The main topic was how to improve security cooperation in the eastern part of the DRC. Uganda's army (UPDF) is already working there to fight the ADF and other terrorist groups. This operation is called Operation Shujaa and is done with the Congolese army (FARDC). The MONUSCO Force Commander praised the UPDF for helping bring peace to the region, especially Eastern DRC. AfroMedia, a group that supports journalism in Africa, has strongly criticized the killing of journalists in Gaza. The group says that what is happening is a serious violation of international laws designed to protect both civilians and media workers during wars. In a recent statement, AfroMedia highlighted that over 240 journalists and media professionals have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023. This makes Gaza the most dangerous place in the world for journalists.   UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed strong condemnation of the recent attack on a secondary school in western Uganda, believed to have been carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) group. According to Ugandan authorities, the ADF rebels targeted Lhubirira secondary school in Mpondwe, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), resulting in the tragic death of at least 37 students. Several other students were critically injured, and six remain in the custody of the rebels. In a statement issued by his deputy spokesperson, Farhan Haq, Guterres called for the perpetrators of this heinous attack to be brought to justice swiftly. Betty Amongi, Uganda's Minister for Gender and Labor Development, is at the forefront of the Ugandan delegation participating in the 67th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) session in New York, USA.  This year's conference is focusing on the critical theme of "Innovation and Technological Change, and Education in the Digital Age for Achieving Gender Equality and the Empowerment of all Women and Girls. The meeting will also evaluate the conclusions agreed upon during the previous session, which addressed the "Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls."
