Lawyer Male Mabirizi Released from Luzira Prison.

  Male Mabirizi, a city lawyer who was serving an 18-month prison sentence at Luzira Prison, has been released before his term was due to end. Mabirizi had stated in a recent letter that he was going to be released on Saturday, 25th February 2023, before midday, as the Prisons Act allows for the state to release prisoners before the completion of their sentence. According to section 84(2) of the Prisons Act 2006, "Each prisoner on admission shall be credited with the full amount of remission (one third of sentence)." Mabirizi had been sentenced to 18 months in February 2022 over contempt of court, but argued that he should be released after serving 12 months. He plans to hold an online interaction with the media and the public to talk about his prison experience.

  Herbert Kityamuweesi, popularly known as Crysto Panda, has expressed his excitement upon joining NRG Radio Uganda.  The well-known media personality and events emcee will be hosting the midmorning show on weekdays, from 11 am to 2 pm, starting on March 1st, 2023. Crysto Panda's move to NRG Radio comes shortly after the station welcomed Sheila Gashumba and Sheila Salta from NBS TV.  In a social media post, Crysto Panda thanked his followers for their support and invited them to tune in to his show, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to fulfill his dream of becoming a radio personality.

Journalist Canary Mugume Welcomes Baby Boy

  The Mugume family will cherish February 24, 2023, as a momentous day when they welcomed their newborn son. A well-known journalist at Next Media took to Twitter on early Saturday morning to share the exciting news of his first child's arrival.  "Yesterday afternoon, Sasha and I were blessed with a beautiful baby boy. Both mother and baby are in excellent condition," he tweeted.

Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu's body returned home after Turkey earthquake.

  The body of Ghanaian footballer, Christian Atsu, who died after an earthquake in Turkey, has been returned to Ghana.  The 31-year-old player had been found dead beneath his home in southern Turkey two weeks ago.  Atsu had played for Premier League clubs Everton and Newcastle, as well as 65 times for Ghana's national team. Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia spoke at the airport in Accra, saying that the late footballer was much-loved and would be sorely missed.  His remains were accompanied to Ghana by family members and the ambassador to Turkey.

Biden makes unannounced visit to Ukraine ahead of Russia invasion anniversary.

  President Joe Biden made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Monday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a powerful show of support just days before the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of the country.  Speaking at the Mariinsky Palace, Biden emphasized the importance of Ukraine's democratic stance and assured its citizens that the world stands with them.  Biden's visit comes at a critical time in the conflict, as both sides gear up for expected spring offensives.  While Zelenskyy urged allies to speed up the delivery of pledged weapon systems, Biden announced an additional half-billion dollars in U.S. assistance, including shells for howitzers, anti-tank missiles, and air surveillance radars.  However, the U.S. President stopped short of providing new advanced weaponry, which Ukraine has been pushing for. Nonetheless, Zelenskyy described the negotiations as fruitful.

Deputy Speaker Urges Collaboration for Private Universities' Growth.

  According to Deputy Speaker, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, the only way private universities can expand is through collaboration and resource sharing.  Speaking at the University of Saint Joseph's second graduation ceremony, Tayebwa urged the new university to mobilize like-minded institutions to establish platforms that enable access and sharing of information.  He also advised private universities to be organized to tap into government resources. Tayebwa further encouraged the graduates to promote good moral values in the job market and adopt a system that facilitates the use of external examiners to promote credibility.  The University's Chancellor, Archbishop of Mbarara His Grace, Lambert Bainomugisha, called on the management to focus on skilling learners to create jobs and appealed for increased government support.  The ceremony saw 184 learners awarded diplomas and conferred Bachelors' degrees in various disciplines.

Fatal Accident Involving IGP's Convoy on Tororo-Iganga Highway.

  A fatal accident occurred along the Tororo – Iganga highway on February 19th, involving a Toyota Land Cruiser leading the convoy of the Inspector General of Police and a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle.  The motorcyclist, identified as Mukose Yunusu, attempted to overtake several vehicles and collided head-on with the lead car of the IGP’s convoy.  Yunusu died on the spot, while his passenger sustained serious injuries.  Two crew members from the lead car also sustained injuries while bringing the vehicle to a full stop.  All injured parties were taken to Bugiri Hospital and later evacuated to Kampala for further treatment.  The deceased’s body was taken to Bugiri Mortuary for a postmortem examination.  The IGP has conveyed his condolences to the victim's family and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Nurse Arrested for Alleged Rape of Patients in Ugandan Hospital

  An intern nurse at Entebbe Grade B hospital, Kutesa Denis, has been arrested on allegations of rape and attempted rape of two female patients at the hospital.  The Kampala Metropolitan Police are currently investigating the matter, and the suspect is being held at Entebbe Central Police Station.  The victims were allegedly drugged using chloroform, which was found in the suspect's residence. A letter was also found where he sought prayers for immoral thoughts.  The case is ongoing, and further details are awaited.

FUFA Beach Soccer League 2022/23.

The first game of the third round of matches in the ongoing FUFA Beach Soccer League 2022/23 saw Mutoola BSC edging out Jinja Lions BSC with a score of 4-3.  Paul Nsege scored two goals and Peter Mukwata and Simon Peter Kijjo scored one goal each for Mutoola BSC.  Shaka Ssozi scored twice and Nicholus Tamale scored once for Jinja Lions BSC.   In the fifth match of the highly anticipated FUFA Beach Soccer League 2022/23 season, Kiringente BSC secured a commanding 5-2 victory over their opponents, MS Sand Lions. The game saw some thrilling moments as both teams put up a fierce fight to secure a win.   Despite their valiant efforts, MS Sand Lions were unable to match the firepower of Kiringente BSC. Simon Kizito and Brian Kiyimba scored one goal each for the Sand Lions, but it was not enough to tip the scales in their favor.   On the other hand, Kiringente BSC showcased their dominance, with Junior Bashir Kagezi scoring twice and Derrick Jim Ssekulima also ...

Uganda's Royal Giant High School Triumphs in CECAFA African Schools Championship Qualifiers

Royal Giant High School of Uganda triumphed in the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers for the CAF African Schools Championship after beating Geda Roble SS of Ethiopia in a penalty shootout.  The Mityana school won 4-2 on penalties with goalkeeper Patrick Katumba saving one of the kicks from Geda Roble SS, while Enock Bagenda, Thomas Ogema, Jovan Katuramu and Najib Nalingi all scored for Royal Giant.  The two teams had faced each other in the group stages, with Geda Roble SS coming out on top, but Royal Giant went on to beat Libya SS in the semifinals before claiming the title and a cash prize of $100,000.  In the girls' category, Uganda's Amus College won the bronze medal and a cash prize of $50,000 after beating Kiramuzi MS from Rwanda 1-0 in the third-place play-off.

FUFA to review controversial incident in Stanbic Uganda Cup match.

The governing body of Ugandan football, FUFA, has launched an investigation into the events that took place during the Stanbic Uganda Cup match between SC Villa and BUL FC on February 17, 2023, resulting in the disallowance of a SC Villa equalizer.  The incident has led to the suspension of assistant referee Muyaga Khalid from further appointments until a decision is made by the competent bodies.  The Chairman of the FUFA Referees Standing Committee, Brian Miiro Nsubuga, confirmed the ongoing review of the situation.

Neymar suffers ankle injury in PSG's win over Lille.

Paris Saint-Germain's win over Lille was marred by an injury to Neymar, who was taken off on a stretcher after twisting his ankle in a collision with Benjamin Andre.  Lionel Messi sealed the 4-3 victory with a stunning injury-time goal, but Neymar's departure in the second half in tears raises questions over his availability for the upcoming Champions League second leg tie against Bayern Munich.  Despite the setback, the Brazilian forward had earlier scored a goal, helping to put PSG 2-0 up following Kylian Mbappe's opener.

In an exceptional Ligue 1 game on Sunday, Paris Saint-Germain secured a 4-3 victory over Lille with a 95th-minute free-kick goal scored by Lionel Messi.  Although Kylian Mbappe scored twice, Neymar was taken off the field on a stretcher due to an ankle injury.  After PSG lost a two-goal lead and were trailing 3-2, Mbappe scored a late equalizer, followed by Messi's magnificent goal.  This win put an end to PSG's three consecutive losses and increased their lead over Marseille by eight points, who will play Toulouse later and face off against the capital club next weekend.

Christian Atsu's remains brought home after devastating earthquake.

The tragic death of former Ghanaian football star, Christian Atsu, who lost his life in a powerful earthquake in Turkey, has brought sorrow to his family and the wider football community.  Atsu, who played for Chelsea and Newcastle, was caught up in the 7.8-magnitude quake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 6th, killing over 44,000 people in the region.  Although early reports suggested he had been rescued, these turned out to be false, and his body was recovered on Saturday.  The remains of the beloved athlete were flown back to his home country on Sunday, accompanied by family members and Ghana's ambassador to Turkey on a Turkish Airlines flight.  Atsu's widow and children paid tribute to him at Newcastle's Premier League match against Liverpool on Saturday.

Death toll from major earthquakes in Turkey rises to over 40,000.

  The death toll from the two major earthquakes that hit southeastern Türkiye on February 6 has risen to 40,642, according to the country's disaster agency.  At a press conference on Saturday, Yunus Sezer, head of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), announced that search and rescue efforts would be largely completed by Sunday evening.  The emergency work was focused on southern Hatay province, which was the hardest hit in last week's quakes.  Sezer reported that nearly 13,000 personnel were working in the area, and a total of 430,000 people were evacuated from the earthquake area.

Three Rescued from Rubble 12 Days After Turkish Earthquake, Child Dies.

  After 12 days of being trapped under the rubble of an apartment block in Antakya, southern Türkiye, a man, his wife, and their child were rescued alive by Turkish rescuers early Saturday, according to a report by the semi-official Anadolu Agency.  Unfortunately, the child died despite on-scene intervention, but the two adults were taken to the hospital. In addition to the rescue, the bodies of two other quake victims were recovered during the international rescue mission.  Rysbek Coldoshbayev, captain of the search and rescue team of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan, confirmed this information.  The devastating earthquake has taken more than 40,000 lives in southern Türkiye.

Qatar-based bid to buy Manchester United confirmed.

  Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the chairman of the Qatar Islamic Bank, has confirmed a bid to buy Manchester United, vowing to make the club great again both on and off the pitch.  The bid will be debt-free and made via his Nine Two Foundation, which will invest in various aspects of the club.  The Glazer family has been in control of Manchester United since 2005, but their loans to gain control were shifted to the club, resulting in debt.  Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the owner of petrochemical company Ineos, is also interested in buying the club. The Glazers have stated they are open to offers for the club.

  The Ghanaian President, Nana Ado Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has expressed his condolences to the family of Christian Atsu, a former Black Stars player and Hatayspor midfielder who was confirmed dead following the devastating earthquake that hit Türkiye.  In a statement on his official social media account, Akufo-Addo conveyed his heartfelt condolences and stated that Ghana football has lost one of its finest personnel and ambassadors.  Atsu was trapped under the rubble after the earthquake and his remains were recovered by Turkish authorities on Saturday morning.  The Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration confirmed the news.

Real Madrid win 2-0 away to Osasuna, narrowing gap with Barcelona in La Liga.

  Real Madrid closed the gap to five points behind league leaders FC Barcelona with a 2-0 victory over Osasuna, thanks to goals from Fede Valverde and Marco Asensio.  Meanwhile, third-placed Real Sociedad was held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Celta Vigo, with Iago Aspas netting a late equalizer.  In other La Liga matches, Betis secured a 2-1 victory over Valladolid, while Mallorca won 4-2 over Villarreal, who saw Manu Trigueros sent off just a minute after conceding a goal. Girona also made history with a 6-2 thrashing of Almeria.

Three Survivors Rescued 12 Days After Turkey Earthquake.

  After being buried under rubble for almost 13 days, three individuals have been rescued from the aftermath of the earthquake that shook southern Turkey.  The survivors, a man, a woman, and a child, were found in the central Antakya district of Hatay and were immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention.  Their identities have yet to be established.

Arsenal Snatches Victory from Aston Villa with Last-Minute Goal by Jorginho.

Arsenal appeared to be on the brink of another setback in the title race against Aston Villa at Villa Park.  Despite coming from behind twice, Martin Odegaard's open goal miss with only 12 minutes remaining had left Arsenal's title hopes hanging by a thread.  It seemed to be a familiar tale of Arsenal's title challenge crumbling before their eyes. However, with just three minutes of added time remaining, Jorginho's unstoppable drive hit the bar, then bounced off Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez's head and over the line.  Arsenal supporters erupted with joy, while Villa fans watched in disbelief. The result was even more satisfying for Arsenal supporters, as their former keeper Martinez was the man who had inadvertently gifted them the win.  The victory was even sweeter given that Martinez had not endeared himself to Arsenal fans since his departure from the Emirates. Barcelona Sign Mexican Defender Julian Araujo on Three-and-a-Half-Year Contract.

  Julian Araujo, a 20-year-old Mexican defender from LA Galaxy, has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with FC Barcelona until June 2026.  The player will begin training with the Barca Atletic team, which is coached by Rafael Marquez. Due to incomplete paperwork, Araujo can only train for the moment and not participate in matches.  Barcelona missed the January transfer window deadline by 18 seconds but has filed an appeal with the Court for Arbitration in Sport to make the defender available for this season.

Former Ghana International Footballer Christian Atsu Found Dead in Turkey Earthquake.

  On Saturday morning, agents of Christian Atsu, a former Ghanaian football player, confirmed his death following the destructive earthquake in Turkey.  Atsu, who was 31 years old, had been missing since February 6, when the 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria.  According to Nana Sechere, one of Atsu's agents, his body was discovered on Saturday morning.  Atsu's club, Hatayspor, expressed their condolences and stated that Atsu's funeral was en route to his home country of Ghana.

Speaker of Parliament Visits Mayuge to Fundraise for Girl Child Education and Maternity Services Improvement.

The Right Honourable Anita Among, Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, has taken on the role of leading a fundraising campaign aimed at supporting the education of girls and enhancing maternity services in the Bunya South constituency located in the Mayuge District.   At the invitation of the region's elected representative, Hajj Iddi Isabirye, the esteemed Speaker has pledged a total of 40 million shillings towards the initiative - 20 million from the Parliament of Uganda and a further 20 million from her own personal funds. The donations are set to make a significant impact in addressing the critical needs of the local community.
